An anchor text link can make or break your SEO.
An Anchor text link is the phrase used to link one website to another website. An anchor text link is also often called a hyperlink.
The whole idea of an anchor text link might seem quite simple. but your overall rankings could greatly suffer if you use anchor text links carelessly. If your goal is to achieve top search engine rankings, there are important things to consider when you select the words you are going to use for your anchor text link.
An anchor text link is really a key factor as to how your backlink will affect you in terms of search engine rankings. Whatever you use for your anchor text link, Google will give you ranking credit. This means if you use “pizza sauce” as the phrase in your anchor text link, Google will start ranking you for it.
Depending on the anchor text link, you may move up in the rankings by a little or a lot. It really depends on the quality of each link and how many links you create. An anchor text link is what controls the page ranking for your keywords.
If you want to rank higher for a specific keyword, use the exact keyword phrase for your anchor text link. How you use an anchor text link is more important than you think.
Most people, even many SEO experts don’t understand this and use the same anchor text. If you use too much of the same anchor text, it is unnatural and will seem suspicious to the search engines.
How you use your hyperlink is critical.
There are two main factors that make an anchor text link effective.
- The relevancy of the anchor text
- The relevancy of the page the anchor text is on.
If you’re posting an article about marathon running and using the anchor text “pizza sauce”, it’s not going to be relevant.
It will help, but won’t provide the same SEO value as anchor text from a relevant article.
There are four types of anchor text links and each will provide different value for SEO purposes:
Exact Keyword Anchor Text Link (Excellent Value)
These use the exact keywords you want to rank for as anchor text. To rank for “pizza sauce”, the best anchor text link to use would be “pizza sauce”, the exact phrase.
Broad Match Anchor Text Link (Great Value)
A broad match anchor text link would not use the exact phrase, but a keyword that is relevant. These could also be sub keywords you want to rank. So if you’re trying to rank for “pizza sauce” a good broad match anchor text link could be “best pizza sauce” or “how to make pizza sauce”. Look for relevant keywords that are low competition and use them as your broad match anchor text link.
You should include more broad match anchor text in your link profile than any other, because even though they might not be the exact keywords you want to rank for, they still contribute to your site’s overall rankings. When you use one keyword as anchor text, you start ranking for related keywords automatically.
Commonly Used Anchor Text Link (Good Value)
Commonly used anchor text are words like “click here”, “ click here now”, “website” or “check this out”. These are generic words people would use to link to your website. Most SEO pros avoid using generic anchor text like “click here” because they don’t think it adds any SEO value, but it does provide SOME value, just not very much.
If you think about it, most non technical people using generic terms all the time, so it’s very important to use them to make your link building appear natural.
URL Anchor Text Link (OK Value)
URL anchor text would just use a URL to link to your website. People often link to websites by using URL’s instead of using a hyperlink. URL anchor text provides the least SEO value, but is very helpful. It will make your link profile seem natural and keeps Google from flagging you.
Overall, you should have a wide variety of anchor text, mainly broad match and exact. Eventually, you will rank for lots of other search terms. Remember that Google doesn’t like SEO at all. They don’t want you manipulating the rankings by building links. That’s why it’s important make your links seem as natural as possible.
So, when it comes to anchor text, remember to vary it. Most SEO’s use around 90%+ exact keyword anchor text, 8% relevant keyword anchor text and perhaps 2% URL/generic anchor text.
In the beginning, avoid using exact anchor text link as much as possible for the first few month’s of your site’s existence. Normal websites don’t just appear and start getting exact anchor text backlinks the next day. Once your site is established, you can use more and more exact anchor text.
Follow this advice and you will have the best short and long term results.
